My boyhood was happily lived during the late forties and early fifties in a large leafy enclave within Midwood's Vanderveer Park Section of Brooklyn, N.Y. My parents, both of second generation Irish descent, were kind , righteous, well-read and full of humor. Our family, neighborhood and Catholic education nourished the upbringing of my siblings and me.

After graduating St. Augustine High School and Fordham University. I earned a J.D. at Fordham Law School and married Mary Roberts, a stunning young neighbor.

After retirement following four decades of work as a corporate lawyer both in the U.S. and abroad, I began to look back and reflect more and more on my boyhood and on the mix of neighborhood characters I had been exposed to during my early years. Some of these reflections were of happy or hilarious events while others were about odd and unpleasant episodes including tragic death. The result was my decision to compile ten short stories about certain happenings which I experienced at a tender age during that long-gone era. I hope that these little stories will provide the reader with amusement, wonder and insight into the uniqueness of the time, the locale and its inhabitants.

Any resemblance of any character to any living person or to his or her relative is wholly coincidental.

GLENWOOD ROAD: SUMMER STARS
By Martin McCormack

Before there was the attraction of Brooklyn’s Park Slope, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint, there was Flatbush to which the Park Slopers, the Williamsburgers, and Greenpointers aspired in the ’30s, ‘40s, ‘50s Brooklyn. It is this Brooklyn to which the readers of Martin McCormack’s Glenwood Road: Summer Stars will escape. This is a neighborhood that had not only the urban advantages of buses, subways, a college campus, and a 10-minute trip to Ebbets Field, but also lawns!

The idyllic look of Flatbush as seen from a drone is not the lived-in Flatbush of Martin McCormack’s stories. In this collection of compelling stories, McCormack reveals the Bund meeting with its “ring of despotic militarism and harsh discipline;” the despair of the single mother “still beholden to Scarlet Letter standards of female behavior;” the “demonic presence” of a bully; and the “corrosive envy” of a disputative neighbor— in short, life being lived in a complex universe.

Readers of Glenwood Road will discover a singular style of writing commanded by a master of language. Martin McCormack creates, dare I say it, never before imagined similes (“fled … like St. Mark at Gethsemane”). He employs cascading parallelisms to add pace to his storytelling and invites laughter in giving characters bombastic manners of speech (“unseemly and predatory litigative incitement bordering on barratry.”) The author also asks his readers to make literary connections to Dreiser, Mencken, Hawthorne and other literary super stars.

Readers who remember the uniqueness of True Grit, A Clockwork Orange and The Shipping News will find stylistic treasures on each page of Glenwood Road: Summer Stars. A gem!
