Max Berkeley is a newly retired ornithologist with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). He's eager to prove he hasn't lost his muscle, his nerve, or his social conscience. His more cautious wife Isabel thinks traveling in their new trailer is like stuffing two whales into a sardine can, one of which is constantly wiggling. Their first destination is the spectacular Zion National Park. Here they join an alliance of misfits intent on stopping the election of a powerful Mormon businessman with a secret life in an isolated desert compound. His goal To spread his own brand of evil throughout Utah and the nation. Polygamy, condors, drones, provocative Mormon tales, and a true historical mystery--Prey for Zion brings all this to life, along with a frantic race to find a long-buried secret and unearth the truth.

Prey for Zion An RV Travel Mystery with Max Isabel Book 1 edition by ED MacDavey Literature Fiction eBooks

I liked this book because of it's background of RV camping and Utah history. It was a good read with many interesting characters and portrayed RV living in a small trailer very realistically. My husband and I used to have the real-life trailer that Rover was based on - a Casita - so I'm very aware of the challenges presented by living in it for a month or more. The storyline of historical Mormon polygamy was nicely interwoven with present-day splinter group polygamists, but made for a complex plot that IMHO was maybe a bit too ambitious for a first time novel. That being said, I will certainly look forward to reading more from this dynamic duo.

Prey for Zion An RV Travel Mystery with Max Isabel Book 1 edition by ED MacDavey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I can't wait for another Max and Izzy "adventure" in yet another National Park! I've never been to Zion, but after reading Prey for Zion," it's on my bucket list! I felt as if I were seeing the beautiful vistas described by MacDavey; thanks for a trip to Utah! Thanks too for a bit of our Morman history tied into a delightful read--definitely a page-turner that I couldn't put down once I started reading! Loved it!!
I liked the fact that this mystery had characters that felt like they could be your neighbors or people you run into on vacation. Max especially was interesting. The author caught the way people with ADHD act and how annoying they can be at times to the people who love and care about them.
The mystery kept me guessing about what could happen next (once again especially to Max) and the bad guys were disturbingly realistic. Now I want to go to Mt. Zion National Park!
The private thoughts of the individual characters enriched the story. The setting was richly described. Couldn't wait till my next opportunity to read, to see what happened next.
I really enjoyed this book. It has great storytelling and intelligent writing, with lots of texture, detail, and depth! The plot was engaging and exciting - I was on the edge of my seat more than once. It had lots of background information about Mormon history and vivid word pictures of Zion National Park. A fun read! I hope there are many more in this series -- I'm looking forward to Max and Izzy's continued adventures!
A mystery unfolds in Zion National Park when one of the protagonists, Max, discovers a mummified body in a hidden canyon, apparently murdered a century ago. As the story unfolds, Max and his wife, Isabel, along with a group of newly found friends, uncover Mormon history regarding the practice of polygamy, and the objections of some of the wives of the early Mormon leaders to this practice. I learned a lot about the early Mormon church in a story that held my interest from start to finish. The characters were believable, and the writing was skilled. I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a great mystery based on historical facts.
I liked the main character's interesting background and the added challenge of ADHD. But serious editing is needed. When several people are sitting at a picnic table, one of them can't also drive up to the site. It's difficult to imagine a group pf people working on a quilt in a 16 or 17 foot trailer. The setting is wonderful but some of the descriptions involved in the action are very difficult to follow.
Want a good mystery with plenty of intrigue, witty dialogue, colorful descriptions of a beautiful landscape, a bit of history, and a page-turner to keep you up reading until the wee hours? Here it is! This was my first purchase for my new kindle, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I learned quite a bit in reading it - about the Church of the Latter Day Saints, about Native Americans, about Zion National Park, even about RV'ing - all the while caught up in a compelling mystery. Highly recommended - you'll love it. When is the next one coming out? Can't wait!
